On Sunday 14 June the Edinburgh Quartet welcomed four groups of musicians to St Mary’s Music School in Edinburgh for a day of intensive chamber music coaching.
The participating groups comprised a quintet from St Mary’s, who were working on Schubert’s “Trout” Quintet; a string quartet from the University of Aberdeen plus two accomplished adult amateur quartets.
The day began with a welcome coffee in the dining hall before the ensembles went off to their rehearsal rooms. Each group received a coaching session from each member of the Edinburgh Quartet on a rotating basis.
After lunch the Edinburgh Quartet performed Shostakovich’s dramatic eighth string quartet to the participants in the beautiful surroundings of the school chapel. At the end of the day the groups gathered in the chapel again to perform to one another.
Everyone thoroughly enjoyed the day and our thanks go to the extremely helpful and welcoming staff of St Mary’s Music School.
The event was supported by Creative Scotland.
