Saturday 10 June, 7.30pm, Summerhall, Edinburgh
We’re just ten days away from our collaborative performance with the National Youth Dance Company of Scotland. We can’t wait to share this very special concert with you but for now, here’s a peek behind the scenes and an insight in to the choreographic process.
The inspirational Marc Brew has created stunning new choreography to quartets by Tom Harrold, Helen Grime & James MacMillan to be performed live by five talented young dancers from the National Youth Dance Company of Scotland alongside EQ. Marc tells us ‘…each piece is so different but I was extremely excited by the challenge of what I could do with the dancers to these wonderful works.
“Rather than setting each step to the music – as at times the music was very complicated and overwhelming – I listed to each piece many times and then generated movement with the dancers inspired by the music. Once all of the material was developed I then crafted it with the music either supporting, opposing or using the space within the score and the use of stillness, shapes and spatial design.
“The dancers are relating to each other, they are human and with emotions, so I guess they are telling stories about being; the narrative is the human interaction.”
Not sure contemporary dance is for you? Marc explains, “…you don’t need to worry about trying to understand contemporary dance; enjoy the interaction and moving images before your eyes, get caught up in the emotions and imagery of where your mind takes you.”
