2006 - 2007 REPERTOIRE: “The Auld Alliance”

During the 2006-7 season we will focus on French and Scottish repertoire, exploring where possible ties between the two countries.

John Blackwood McEwen (1868 – 1948) wrote no less than 17 beautifully turned string quartets; while the earlier ones recall Brahms, he soon fell under the spell of Debussy (and indeed of France in general) and the later works show a corresponding lightness of touch. Eugen d’Albert was a Glaswegian, although obviously of French parentage: his two quartets are influenced more by Fauré and Chausson.

Debussy, Fauré and Chausson will obviously feature in this series, through string quartets but also Chausson’s concerto for solo violin, piano & quartet and Fauré’s chamber works with piano. There is also Ravel’s Quartet and works by Milhaud (who wrote 18 string quartets!), Saint-Saens, Lalo, and Vincent d’Indy. And many more beautiful works by unjustly neglected French composers – Guillaume Lekeu, Alberic Magnard, Roger-Ducasse, Florent Schmitt.

For the Scottish side, the above-mentioned McEwen & d’Albert will feature alongside Mackenzie, the Earl of Kelly and perhaps Marie Dare. As usual, works closer to the present day from both countries may well feature in our lunchtime concerts at Edinburgh’s Reid Hall.

Beethoven cycle
Running alongside all these French and Scottish delicacies will be more substantial nourishment in the form of our slow but ongoing Beethoven cycle, starting in April 2006.

2004 - 2005

Repertoire for 2004/5 is based once again upon the main Edinburgh series and the new Glasgow series beginning in October 2004. This will be loosely based upon the "Eminent Victorians" theme which will encompass the startlingly wide range of chamber music written in the 19th century. This will take us from late Haydn to early Schoenberg, via Mendelssohn (Opus 12/ Opus 44), Tchaikovsky, Dvorak, Bruch and others.

Schubert's Cello Quintet (Moray Welsh or Deirdre Cooper) will be paired with the soon to be rediscovered Quintet by Hamish McCunn.

In Piano Quintets by Cesar Franck, Kenneth Leighton and Schumann the Quartet will be joined by Gustav Fenyo, Leslie Howard or Robert Markham.

Viola Quintets by Mendelssohn and Bruckner will be included as part of the "Eminent Victorian" theme.

2003 - 2004

For our current main Edinburgh concert series (2003 - 2004), we decided to take a look at the decade the EDINBURGH QUARTET was founded. We paired usually-neglected masterpieces from the 1950s with Haydn's six (also comparatively neglected) Quartets op. 50, finishing each programme with a major Romantic work. Critical response to this idea was enthusiastic from the outset:

"The Queens Hall [concerts] will be a celebration of the ensemble's origins, emphasising the 1950s and some of the works heard at that time. [...] Conspicuously present are Shostakovich's Fifth Quartet, Matyas Seiber's Third, and the second quartets of Edmund Rubbra, Robert Simpson, George Enescu, and Kenneth Leighton - the last of these, composed in 1957, predating that admirable composer's appointment as Edinburgh's Reid professor of music." - Conrad Wilson, The Herald, 15 October 2003

This approach - actively seking out lesser-known masterpieces from the mid-18th century onwards, while drawing on the EQ's vast existing repertoire to achieve programme combinations that show all the works in the best possible light - will certainly continue into the future. Next year's main series, for instance, will consist only of 19th-century music but will start with Haydn, finish with Schoenberg and feature many composers rarely associated with the quartet repertoire.

Further ahead, the '05 - '06 series will celebrate the major anniversaries of Mozart and Shostakovich in 2006 but, at least in Mozart's case, concentrate on the works outside his canon of major string quartets.
