50th Anniversary Gala Concert
news item posted 17 February 2010
Few chamber ensembles have made it to a half century of music making. The Edinburgh Quartet is one of these few and a highlight of its season will be on Friday February 19th at the Queen's Hall Edinburgh (7.30pm).
Unfortunately Philip Langridge, who was to join us in a performance of "On Wenlock Edge", Vaughan Williams' beautiful cycle of six songs on words by A.E. Housman, is indisposed. We are delighted however that Andrew Staples is able to replace him on this celebratory occasion. Andrew is a young tenor with a genuinely international reputation and we are looking forward very much to stepping out on stage with him and pianist Terence Allbright to share this wonderful music with our audience.
A new quartet "Spieltrieb" by Howard Blake will receive its premiere at the concert. Howard has been involved with the Edinburgh Quartet since the very beginning, having been the piano partner of Miles Baster, founding leader of the Quartet in 1960. He has dedicated the work to the Edinburgh Quartet in this 50th anniversary year and we are very grateful to him.
Haydn will be represented by his Quartet in G Opus 77 No 1 and the big work after the interval will be Mendelssohn's rousing Octet. In this, the Edinburgh Quartet will be joined by the Medlock Quartet, a prizewinning young quartet from the Royal Northern College of Music. Undoubtedly musicians at the start of a great career, their ensemble has a few years to go yet before catching up with us!
