Cumnock Tryst: Opening Concert

  • St John's Church 92 Glaisnock Street Cumnock, Scotland, KA18 1JU United Kingdom (map)

HAYDN String Quartet op 20 no 5 in F minor
RORY BOYLE String Quartet No 2 (Quartetto da Requiem) WORLD PREMIERE
DVORAK String Quartet op 105 in A flat

The concert opens with one of Haydn’s early works in the medium from 1772. He became known as “the father of the string quartet” and this, one of his Sun Quartets, points to his flowering genius. This is followed by a brand new work receiving its world premiere from a wonderful composer based in Ayrshire, Rory Boyle. The recital culminates in a performance of Dvořák’s last string quartet from 1896. This had gestated while he was in America and brings something of that New World magic to his chamber music.

Cumnock Tryst are delighted to welcome the Edinburgh Quartet to Cumnock. Formed in 1960, the Edinburgh Quartet has long been celebrated as one of Britain’s foremost chamber ensembles, having appeared regularly at prestigious venues across the UK and toured extensively abroad. I’m proud to be their Patron, and delighted that they continue their commitment to the living composer; this time, my Ayrshire colleague Rory Boyle.
