A new Schubert series at St Cecilia’s Hall

This autumn the Edinburgh Quartet launches Schubert: A String Quartet Journey, a new six-concert lunchtime series at Edinburgh’s beautiful St Cecilia’s Hall, Scotland’s oldest concert hall.

Running from September 2026 to June 2027, the series follows Schubert’s extraordinary development as a chamber musician, from the restless energy of the quartets he wrote as a teenager to the great works of his final years.

The opening concert on 28 September pairs Haydn’s String Quartet Op. 77 No. 2, one of the last complete quartets by the composer who did so much to shape the form, with Schubert’s youthful Quartet in G minor, D.173.

Highlights later in the season include Rosamunde, the great G major Quartet D.887, and the C major String Quintet. The series will also feature a special anniversary concert on 26 March 2027, marking exactly 200 years since Beethoven’s death. Schubert’s Death and the Maiden will be heard alongside music from Beethoven’s visionary late quartets. A fitting meeting of two composers whose final years transformed the possibilities of the string quartet world.

The season concludes in June with Schubert’s C major String Quintet, joined by guest cellist and Edinburgh Quartet Apprentice Clare Juan.
